Robert Burns (1759 – 1796) was born in Alloway, Scotland, to William and Agnes Brown Burnes. Like his father, Burns was a farmer. Throughout his life he was also a practicing poet. His poetry celebrated aspects of farm life, traditional culture, and religious practice. He is considered the national poet of Scotland. Each year Burns’ funs celebrate his life and poetry with a special evening eating the traditional Scottish dishes and reading his poety. Burns wrote in the Scots language.
